Review

Latayne Scott is a gifted writer with a thorough knowledge of Mormonism. The book is filled not only with excellent information, but keen analysis. Moreover, she demonstrates genuine kindness and empathy toward Latter-day Saints, based on her positive experiences growing up in the LDS Church...The additional material provides excellent insight into current trends and problematic issues facing the Mormon world. Ms. Scott is very tuned in to the current climate, and she addresses all of the key issues and debates. People often ask me to recommended books on Mormonism. This one has risen to the top of my list. --Ross Anderson, author of Understanding the Book of MormonAfter reading Latayne Scott's The Mormon Mirage, I would say she has done the most complete analysis of the history and contemporary scene of the LDS religious movement. I recommend it highly. --Jackie Stearsman, Director, Florida School of Preaching

After reading Latayne Scott's The Mormon Mirage, I would say she has done the most complete analysis of the history and contemporary scene of the LDS religious movement. I recommend it highly. Her book presents one of the most complete treatments of Mormon theology that I've read in some time. It is thorough, historically accurate, well researched and documented with up to date evidence that substantiates even further the falseness and deceptiveness of Mormonism. Her presentation of the errors of Mormonism is admirably balanced by her honest portrayal of not only the positive values of the Mormon Church, but in sharing her soul-wrenching resolve to leave the religion she had so loved, to embrace only Biblical truths - a heart-tugging decision that I can well identify with.

I've been in the process of leaving the Mormon church for some years, now. Have been LDS since 1984, not always active in the faith, but still on the rolls, & still considered LDS, I guess. Latayne's books have helped immensely in my decision to leave Mormonism. Latayne loved the LDS faith, but came to believe (realize) that the doctrines are not true. Why in the world, though, did the publishers make the type so tiny?? I had to buy much stronger readers, to read this book, as my normal glasses didn't magnify the tiny type enough.

Great follow up. Was given the original about 30 years ago and solidified my decision to not join the LDS. As a Christian I was looking for and admired greatly many of the family programs that are successfully implemented by the Mormon church. Was having doubts about Joseph Smith and the baptism required. Both editions stepped nicely into many aspects of LDS church and church life. Not critical but painfully true. Written by one who was raised in the faith and luckily was awakened. Although I still admire many of the Mormon practices, ( monday is still "family home evenings) I encourage all who are considering joining the LDS to read this book before committing.

A very well written book on the insanity of the Mormon religion. Latayne speaks from experience being a faithful and involved Mormon and covers the lies, contradictions, failed prophecies of founder Joseph Smith and Mormonism's absolute departure from the teachings of Jesus and his Apostles.

As a born again Christian who has been getting "missionary lessons" from Mormons, I had to buy and read this book in order to find my own way through the Mormon religion. At first, I was thinking the Mormon religion wasn't too far off from my own beliefs. The missionaries seem to say what they think I want to hear. Seems that you aren't informed as to ALL that their church requires until AFTER you are baptized into their religion. Latayne Scott wrote this wonderful, thoughtful and informative book for Mormons who want to learn the truth and non-Mormons who wish to learn about Mormonism. I love that she uses biblical references to point out the similarities and or differences. I made so many highlights in my Kindle so that I can re-reference this book as many times as I need to. I recently met an ex-Mormon and asked him to read this book, I hope he does as he is now atheist. Everything you need to know about Mormonism is explained in this book.

Excellent book to have, excellent index and notes with exact references showing where statements can be found in their own LDS literature. Devastating to a Mormon seeking the truth about their cult. Probably the most shocking statement I found was Joseph Smith comparing himself to Mohammad... ""If the people will let us alone, we will preach the gospel in peace. But if they come on us to molest us, we will establish our religion by the sword. We will trample down our enemies and make it one gore of blood from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. I will be to this generation a second Mohammed, whose motto in treating for peace was, 'the Alcoran or the Sword.' So shall it eventually be with us--'Joseph Smith or the Sword'" This statement is in The Mormon Mirage p. 50

There is nothing new in this book and is not presented as well as other books. The author was apparently converted to an evangelical faith and wants you to go that way. She should have just stuck to the facts and let them speak for themselves. At that she doesn't present the facts as well as others do.

Very well written! Significant research and personal experience.

This book had amazing information. I wish it ended a little less bias based on the fact that the author is now Christian, but for the most part it was very informative.
