"Tim Wise is a truth-teller and long distance freedom-fighter. He is my vanilla brother whose fight against White Supremacy is exemplary and inspiring!"Cornel West"[Wise's] work is revolutionary, and those who react negatively are simply afraid of hearing the truth."Robin D.G. Kelley, Professor of History, University of Southern California, author of Yo' Mama's Disfunktional!: Fighting the Culture Wars in Urban America"Tim Wise has produced an eloquent, meticulously researched book that could make economic inequality a central issue in the 2016 presidential election. The book I can best compare it to is Michael Harrington's The Other America which helped inspire 'The War On Poverty.' Written in passionate prose, invoking honored American traditions, it has the power to change minds and melt hearts. I look forward to sharing it with my students, and with anyone else concerned with justice and equity"Mark Naison, Professor of African American Studies and History, Fordham University and author of White Boy: A Memoir and Badass Teachers Unite!"America 'under the affluence' is a cruel and heartless place. By word and by deed, we turn against the poor and feast on a diet of resentment and myths. If anyone can unpack the racist and patriarchal lies that undergird our current culture of cruelty, Tim Wise can. In clear, simple language, product of a lifetime of research, he describes how we got here and how we might build a more compassionate place. We need his voice."Laura Flanders, host of GritTV with Laura Flanders"A single imagewatching the Super Bowl under conditions like our distribution of wealthis worth the price of Under the Affluence. Most of us are dying, crushed because we're stacked 50 in a seat, while the 1% ... But read it for yourself. Wise has spent many hours reading what the Right has written to dehumanize poor people, so you don't have to! He humanizes them back, using real evidence."James Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me and Sundown Towns."Acclaimed inequality essayist and community activist Wise (Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority, 2012, etc.) reports on the damage being incurred in America whereby 'the have-nots and have-lessers are dehumanized while the elite are venerated.' In describing how modern society has become a 'culture of cruelty,' as past attempts to sympathize and support those less fortunate have collapsed beneath the weight of classism and racism, the author explores the framework and the consequences of the nation’s economic crisis. He lucidly ponders its genesis as well as the ramifications of wealth inequality, including the rampant demonization of the poor and the valorization of the rich by way of what he refers to as 'Scroogism.' Wise’s extensive experience as an anti-racism activist and a longtime member of the radical left greatly informs his text, which demonstrates, through facts and case histories, that America's enduring racial divide continues to be directly tied to its economic problems. His well-rounded scholarly discussion benefits from the varying intellectual perspectives he offers, including opinions on the damaging effects of blind corporate obeisance to the 'myth of meritocracy.' What is apparent, he believes, is the need for solutions to achieve the kind of 'culture of compassion' necessary for true redemption and a dismantling of social stratification. Wise recognizes that this achievement is a tall order to fill, particularly in the presence of the current elite economic oligarchy possessing the capital and the influence to trounce equalization efforts. Sharp and provocative the book concludes with hope that his analysis and those like it will spur a counter-narrative outwardly challenging the false notion that both the wealthy and the poor 'deserve' their places within our culture’s economic stratum. An impassioned, intellectual, and vigorously dense report on the repercussions of severe socioeconomic imbalance in the United States.”Kirkus Reviews"Under the Affluence is an important source of databubbling over with hard, footnoted factsto strengthen readers’ resolve against the escalating inequalities in the United States … the book is an essential compendium of numbers, one that will prove useful in strategizing to end inequality and arming readers with the facts they need to tackle these seemingly intractable problems. Overall, the book is an impassioned and heartfelt defense of the poor that is rooted in the idea that America can, as Wise says, 'crawl from under the affluence to a place more equitable.’”—Eleanor J. Bader, RH Reality Check

The tone of this book is very different from previous books by Tim Wise. I have read all of the books Tim has published, listened to his talks, and seen him speak in person. His early work - blog posts, White like me - were VERY strident. Each page or paragraph seemed to include name calling and ridicule towards people he disagreed with. Reviews on his other books here on Amazon corroborate this. But in this book, his tone (and maybe his attitude or editor) have changed and softened. In his intro, he was revealing in describing that building consensus does not come from demeaning or dividing. The rest of his book is similar to his other books (sans White like me), being that it is loaded with statistics (which are interesting). I am not done reading the book, but I am enjoying it so far. His less strident tone is refreshing.
Through a wealth of information, anti-racist and activist Tim Wise delivers a challenging but significant read in his book, Under the Affluence Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich, and Sacrificing the Future of America. Wise paints a picture of the diversity that exists in our society and highlights the economic inequality which has occurred throughout American history. Delivering a wide range of perceptions about diverse issues of race and social injustices conveyed through current economic truths and impacts of historical figures and events, readers are confronted to educate our society today in the need for solutions to create a more compassionate mindset. He raises controversies and forces the reader to emotionally think and reflect on the world in which we live. When reading this book, you cannot help but feel the emotions of sympathy, disgust, anger, sorrow, compassion, confusion, and guilt. This book will leave you motivated to fight economic and moral injustices and make a change to stop the sacrificing of the future of America. Deborah Daniels
Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich, and Sacrificing the Future of America is a rich, thorough, and thought-provoking book on the inequality of today’s political system. While some of the statistical data may seem overwhelming for the average reader, Tim Wise uses a variety of literary metaphors and explicit examples to help the reader gain a firm understanding. His analysis of today’s economic system is heavily detailed and supported with an extensive list of references. Wise works to remove the glitz and glamor of our economic system, and expose the injustices in race and social class. This text will cover the changes in the perception of the lower class, explore the hypocrisy of the most elite, and will push you to develop compassion. His detailed analysis will leave you angry, appalled, and most importantly, motivated to push for change. If you are looking for a text that is real and exposes the realities of our economic system, look no further than Tim Wise’s Under the Affluence.
A well-researched and comprehensive examination of the factors that continue to drive inequality and why the social welfare state is so malnourished why the plutocracy continues to enrich itself.Wise is also one of the first authors to clearly identify the relationship between race and the antipathy towards government assistance to the underclass.Wise's most significant contribution is that the "politics of protest" will not result in significant change until we can first alter the anti-poor narrative which results in the underclass being oppressed and despised while the rich are protected and venerated.
Tim Wise’s look at the economic inequity and the reasons behind it is well-suited for the open-minded. I believe it’s more appropriate for those looking to further understand the differences between the rich and poor in America, and useful for educators in helping us understand the impacts we may see from this in our classrooms with students. His use of humor and analogies were the more approachable sections, but I found some difficulty with the inclusion of so many economic statistics. While the audience can clearly identify Mr. Wise’s opinions, they are well supported with documented research of the historical impacts of inequity and the current and future impacts through government funded programs. It is more of a liberal perspective, and his humor mostly attacks views associated with the conservative population in America. Overall, it is a thorough description of the realities of living in poverty in America and helps the audience further understand their role in the inequity of the economy and the diminished American Dream.
A well written and honest assessment of how the political and economic dialogue in this country has been stolen by the right. Also, the issue of race is dealt with openly and honestly. If one wants to know what is wrong with America, then I would highly recommend this book. We are getting what we deserve and what we have allowed.
The book, Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich, and Sacrificing the Future of America, by Tim Wise, is an interesting view of the inequalities that are embedded in American society. Through statistics, research, and data, Wise thoroughly discusses the struggles that exist in our country through race and poverty. With each valid point about the injustice that is still alive in American society, Wise is able to support it through his research. Through the use of overwhelming statistics, his evidence brings on many emotions for the reader. As an educator, I am able relate to the vast disparities in our population. Wise uses examples from throughout history to prove the injustice that is taking place. He also uses the story, A Christmas Carol, to make connections between America and Scrooge. After reading the book, you will be left asking, “What can I do to make a change for the better?â€
Very interesting eye opening book...the roadblocks to success built in to our economy result in an "economic apartheid". This is a must read for open minded Republicans as well as tried and true Democrats...Myth busters for American politics.
