If you are just getting into bee keeping this book is a must, and that coming from a guy who has never found any of the "For Dummies" books very useful. I have read 3 books on the subject in the last few weeks, and skimmed several others. All of them have some of the information from contained in this book, but none of them have all or near as much information. It was a easy to read format, which has been my issue with most f the other "For Dummies" books. I am currently reading it a second time. Within 3 weeks of reading this book I have built a complete hive system with 3 honey supers and a top feeder, as well as a swarm lure box. I was able to capture about 6000 bees in what I thought was a swarm, but thanks to this book I identified it as having no queen, and being a large group of robber bees, which forced me to release them all. If you are considering bee keeping, or are just Intrigued with bees, this is a great book. I would highly recommend this book. Additionally I purchased the kindle version and found no issues with the formatting.
Found this book to be highly educational for the newbie. Particularly like that articles are cross referenced to other sections of the book so going from one section to another is easy. That is, if an article mentions 'varroa mites' than you are told what section of the book deals with that particular problem. This will be my reference book for beekeeping. Purchased this as an e-book and find it difficult to search through areas. Would recommend purchasing the printed edition rather than the e-book.
I recommend this book as a supplement to your library of beekeeping tomes to help reduce any anxieties and answer most questions a beginning beekeeper (or bee-curious) person may have prior to embarking in this sweet hobby. HOWEVER, I do not think it should be your primary manual as the author wrote it primarily for owners of the Langstroth hives - which is useless to anyone wanting a more "natural" hive such as the Kenya top-bar hive (or even the Warre hive). If your primary objective is having a honey factory, then Langstroth hives are the way to go. But if you want to go into beekeeping for the "organic" idea of having your garden pollinated and wanting your bees in as "natural" an environment as possible (to help them be less stressed and therefore disease resistant) then you want to look into top-bar hive options. They still produce plenty of honey, but not at the same frantic pace as the Langstroth hived bees do. And the honeycombs come out with the honey in a top-bar hive unlike the Langstroth hives where you "scrape" it off the frames to release the honey. So what does that mean for those of you who buy this book. You'll probably find chapters 1-4 are most useful as they give general bee background and help build the vocabulary you need to understand "bee talk". Chapters 10-14 are helpful as they talk about problems you'll encounter as a beekeeper and solutions to get your hive back on track. Other that that, you'll find yourself glossing over many portions of the remaining 11 chapters. So to summarize, unless your primary goal is to have a honey factory, only about 1/2 of this (easy to read) book is going to be useful for all you new-bees.
I'be been going through the same struggle most new bee keepers have had to endure. Get told by all experienced beekeepers that if you ask 7 beekeepers what to do, you'll get 7 different answers. What you want get are any useful answers. They won't even tell you what books to read, they just tell you to read books about it. Let me help.Read this book! Seriously, it's an easy to understand and comprehensive breakdown of the what, why and how.*********This isn't gospel but if you're an aspiring enthusiast and you are overwhelmed and just want to know how to get started for the season, here's what I recommend. Buy this book, then... *********Start with a Langstroth hive. Choose 8 or 10 frame based solely on how much weight you're comfortable with lifting.Buy a nucleus (Nuc) bee colony for your first hive. They will be about 5 weeks ahead of buying your queen and workers separately. They will already know their queen so there's no concern of rejection. Once you're comfortable with bees you can take the cheaper route. For your first time it's worth the little bit of extra money.Just buy the whole advanced beginners kit from whatever distributor you have near you. Build off of that once you get a feel for what you prefer. Beginners advanced kits will give you everything you need to get started and get you through the first year.Set aside around $500 for startup equipment and bee colony costs.
Howland does a great job of leading you through your initial journey into beekeeping. If you already know a bit about the subject you may find yourself skipping around a bit, as some of the text is pretty elementary. As my first journey into the world of beekeeping I read every single word, in order, in just about one sitting. I've found myself referencing back to it from time to time to reinforce knowledge as I creep towards my first season as an actual beekeeper. It's VERY exciting, and this book did a great job of stoking that flame while also giving you a realistic idea of what you'll be up against as a beekeeper
Like most Dummies books, well written, laid out clearly, and a valuable means to learn something new that becomes an excellent reference.I've seen the occasional beekeeper say they don't like this book or disagree or claim the information is incorrect but if you keep bees for a year or two you realize every topic is prone to disagreement. What works for one keep fails for another. Ask three beekeepers an opinion and you'll get four answers because by the time they are finished talking one of them will have changed their mind!Seriously though the book clearly explains many times when there are differing opinions, methods, and offers choices in most of these examples. Great book.
