I must say I am quite impressed Dr. Coile’s book. I have had many different all breed books over the years but this one, for total content, has become an instant favorite. It’s written so a novice can understand and yet doesn’t insult an experienced owner’s intelligence. The easy wipe off cover surface and sturdy paper will withstand heavy use from the youngest of readers.Each breed is covered in two pages, with each with a photo: one stacked and the other in a working pose or in a more relaxed natural setting. The “At a Glance” section not only answers the questions most often asked to find that family pet; but addresses specifics an experienced person might use to learn about a new breed. A judge could even use it as a quick reference guide.Books that cover all breeds of dogs usually furnish a history, a standard and touch on temperament. This book goes more than one step further. Other in depth sections are labeled "Illustrated Standard," “Temperament,” “Upkeep,” “Health,” and “Form and Function.”This lovely hard back, coffee table edition is quite heavy. Many may find a eReader version more to their liking. I love my hard cover copy but, as soon as I can, I will also be purchasing the Kindle version for quick reference.

This book has numeric ratings for major dog traits such as friendliness toward other dogs and people, train-ability, watchfulness, etc. I found these at-a-glance ratings to be very beneficial when reviewing each dog breed. It is the best dog book I've ever seen. Some complain that the book doesn't cover enough breeds. But, the trade off is that each breed includes wonderful color pictures and a long narrative of the breeds traits. Each breed has 2 pages of photos and information. If you're looking for a detailed encyclopedia of dogs, you've found it with this one.

For anyone who is interested in general information on dog breeds, anyone who's looking at either adapting, rescuing or purchasing a particular breed of dog, then I suggest you get a hold of this beautiful illustrative, informative and easy to read encyclopedia. If you're a dog lover like myself and want to learn more about these beautiful, intelligent, loyal and loving animals, you really shouldn't go passed this book.

I was simply looking fot a book for my kids to look through since they encounter different dog breeds alot. This has become my favorite because the wealth of detail and the amazing picture that are in this book was unexpected. The alternate breed names and historical information on the origins and how the traits came to be, plus temperament with children, diseases etc really made this sort of a coffee table book into a book we open for ideas on our next puppy.Getting another for a gift definitely

I had a book like this when I was a kid and loved it. I always referenced it when I saw a new dog and wanted to show everyone what i had learned. My niece loves dogs so much so I figured this book would be perfect for her. She is 7 and very smart; she may not be able to use all the info in this book now, but this is a book that can be kept for a lifetime. I still have mine! :)

Gave this book to my granddaughter, who's 8, and she loves it - knows more about dog breeds than I do now, and is much more prepared to choose a dog when we go looking. Otherwise it's also a real fun read even if you aren't actively looking for a pet because there's lots of history and other info too.

Great book for learning about dog breeds. It includes the history as well as the modern day roles. The charts at the top are particularly helpful for comparing and contrasting. My only complaint is that some popular breeds, such as pit bulls, are left out.

Have the first and second Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, so wanted to update and get the third edition since new breeds were added.Just hope they keep using AKC show quality pics (There are a few dog breed pics shown that aren't the greatest representatives of the breed).But the info is great for any dog lover!
