Very, very refreshing! I have never read a psychology book which has helped me feel so "found" before. Yet, Karen Horney still has a way of leaving the "being found" up to you. If you would like to untangle some things in your life, if you would like to figure yourself out a little better, or if you just want to get a handle on the voices that you have internalized over the years, then this book is for you! But, beware, it will likely challenge you to be as honest with yourself than you have ever been. This book will not let you keep wearing "band-aids" forever, but will allow you to start on the path to true healing and authentic change. ...And to think it was written in the 1940s!
This is a great book I read it years ago, just wanted my own copy for re-read
For those of us that deal with emotional issues and are striving to better ourselves by examining our behavior and wanting to improve ourselves, this is a wonderful read and very helpful
Great product and service.
This book should be read. It was awkward reading the Moving Toward chapter, because it was like looking in a mirror (though I'm not as extreme as her descriptions). This is a decent way of conceptualizing clients, and should be considered when doing so. I don't agree with all of any theory or approach to counseling, so I'll not address my disagreements with any of her presuppositions. I am a conservative Christian, so naturally I disagree with some things. But there are some really good things in this book.
Dr.Horney is highly readable. I use her in my hypnotherpy pratice/
I'm not a psychiatrist or a psychologist but I found this book quite helpful to understanding some of my inner conflicts. I reread some chapters a few times because I felt like with each re-reading, I learned something new. Would definitely recommend it to those who are interested in self-help books but aren't willing to read hundreds of pages of psychoanalytical works.
Heard about her from an Orthodox Christian podcast. Karen Horney was not Orthodox, but her ideas have similarities with some of the ideas held in the Orthodox Church regarding our lack of self-knowledge when left to our own devices. She has details about the ways we can have false ideas about ourselves. Speaks of how to grow past these false notions of self. Some chapter titles: Moving Toward People; Moving Against People; Moving Away from People; The Idealized Image; Fears; Impoverishment of Personality. The conclusion is called: Resolution of Neurotic Conflicts.
