This book I give 5-Stars.I loved this book as a child, I mean I read a lot of books, but my dad read this to me at bedtime and honestly between this book and a couple others, my dad was a saint, because he never said,"Suzy, don't you want to read a different book?" Because I had a baby brother at the time, this book I could relate too, and use my imagination, something kids really don't use that much today. After all the book is for kids, not adults.Anyway- when I had my daughter I searched for this book along with others and was SOOOOOO happy when I found it I was like BUY IT NOW!!!! I was so excited. My daughter loved this book and to this day its on her shelf and cherishes it, we had the best bedtime story time ever.
I remember our school librarian reading this book to us when I was in the 2nd grade (I think), and it really left a positive impression with me. Something about living on a ship with a garden, animals, and a fully-equipped kitchen was truly captivating. It was probably the cooking part that I liked the most, along with Maggie's general independence. In any case, I forgot the title, so I did some creative searching on Amazon and finally reconnected with it... and bought it! I've already loaned it out to my neighbor with a 4 year-old, and I'll definitely keep it on hand for little visitors.
I feel bad not giving this a stellar review like all the other reviewers but I didn’t grow up reading this book so I’m coming at it from a different perspective. My son loves books, he would have us read to him all day if we had the time. I read this to him and he seemed interested, asked a few questions, got a little frightened when the storm came, closed the book and hasn’t asked to read it again which is highly unusual for him as he loves books so much. So three stars! Lovely illustrations though.
My boys (age 6&8) loved this book. Really sparked their imagination for what their own ships might have, or who they would take along for the voyage.
I read about this book on Mighty Girl and had it in my cart until a used hardcover came up at a decent price. If you have a little girl, I think this book is a must. Maggie is sweet, calm and capable watching over her boat and little brother. My 5 yr old loves it
I loved this book as a kid and now my kids love it too. It creates such a sweet and wonderful picture of imagination, adventure, responsibility, family and love. It's beautifully illustrated and an easy read. For me, this rates as one of those classic kids books that everyone should have in their kids' library!
Delightful story for the young ones at library story time. The illustrations are full of detail to capture the eye. Margaret exhibits quite a responsible character and her care for baby brother is inspiring.
I don't know what it is about this book. It just makes my soul happy...and gives me cravings for stew.
