Review
A writer offers a translation of a famous Chinese work with commentary from a qigong perspective. The Dao De Jing is an ancient Chinese classic by Lao Tzu that serves as the foundational text of Taoism as well as an influence on the development of Confucianism and Buddhism. Qigong is a holistic practice of movements, breathing, and meditation that can aid in healing, spiritual growth, and martial arts training. The Dao De Jing was based on Lao Tzu's “personal understanding about the Dao and the De through his personal qigong practice,†writes Yang (Pain-Free Joints, 2017, etc.) in his introduction. “Since the Dao of managing the body is similar to the Dao of managing a country,†Lao Tzu “offered moral guidance to historical Chinese rulers.†After some preliminary material supplying a context for Lao Tzu and his work―along with a rundown of some of its underlying philosophical concepts―Yang provides all 81 chapters of the Dao in both the Chinese original and in his English translation. He then delivers both a general interpretation of each chapter's meaning and a qigong-specific analysis. In the case of Chapter 29, for instance (“Doing Nothing―Be Natureâ€), the general interpretation discusses the concept of wuwei (doing nothing) as it applies to governance: “A ruler should govern according to Nature. Too much of acting on the world (using force) will fail.†The qigong analysis, in turn, is focused on the importance of regulating the mind: “When you practice qigong, your mind must be in a neutral and calm state.†Yang's translations capture the delicate precision of the original while presenting it in highly accessible language. The dual interpretations of the text are an enlightening feature, even for those readers with no prior interest in qigong. The general interpretation is more outward-facing, toward the world; the qigong one is inward-facing, toward the self. Between the two, the full picture of the Dao emerges as an intriguing symmetry. This is a long book (nearly 540 pages) for a relatively short text, but Yang's commentaries greatly aid in understanding Lao Tzu's words and the worldview behind them.An elegant and comprehensive critical edition of the Dao De Jing. I'll admit my excitement when I first learned of this book. If you are familiar with Dr. Yang's works, you know he is thorough and detailed in his explanations. This book first presents the 'standard' interpretation, which is one that is more literal. These generally relate to society and the Dao. Dr. Yang takes these same words and relates them to the practice of qigong in a way that is immediately accessible and understandable. I'm only eight chapters in, and my excitement has only grown. This book delivers. Highly recommend.
A translation of the Dao De Jing that is full of the books original essence and transcends the world of mere flowery words and Facebook level spiritual wisdom. This book is the real deal and Dr. Yang puts his extensive knowledge of science as a Ph.d together with his profound Qigong and teaching experience to deliver what I believe is Lao Tzu's real message.
Amazing book for any student of Qigong, Daoism, Chinese medicine or spiritual science
Well done interpretation.
I first set out on a lifelong engagement with the martial arts, qigong, and yoga over 50yrs ago, and in much of that time Dr Yang's writings and videos have served as a major go-to resource for acquiring a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the rich Chinese traditions and practices … This latest volume offers a seminal commentary on the DAO DE JING from a vantage that is usually either downplayed or ignored altogether in other treatments of the "5000 Character Classic," yet which is clearly woven throughout the work's 81 chapters – the perspective of an accomplished practitioner of inner energy work and spiritual cultivation … Resting on deep holistic intuitions concerning the nature of the universe and our place in it, the layered wisdom expressed in Lao Zi's verses is as applicable to an individual's course of spiritual self-development as it is to the management of a large organization or country, and vice versa … As Dr Yang notes in his introduction,"Since the Dao of managing the body is similar to the Dao of managing a country, Lao Zi was able to incorporate his understanding into his writing that offered moral guidance to historical Chinese rulers … because once you have comprehended and mastered the principles and natural rules of the Dao, you will be able to apply them to other fields …".This book is the fruit of a lifetime's dedicated practice, research, and contemplation … Though expressing humble reservations concerning his own ability to do this venerable classic justice, Dr Yang has definitely succeeded in shedding a welcome light on the practical aspects of Lao Zi's teachings for those embarked on a journey of spiritual self-discovery through the door of qigong practice … This is a book for old hands and beginners alike, and one to grow on … Thank you, Dr Yang!
This is one of those rare books which are actually worth reading. Especially for someone with genuine interest in Qigong and the ancient Chinese philosophy. And if you're that kind of a person you'll return to it again and again.I don't read this book Chapter by Chapter as one would normally read a book to follow the sequence of events. I jump from Chapter 1 to Chapter 10 and then go back or forward depending on what I am looking for. This book is deep; one can use it as a reference for better comprehending the Qigong practice or a boat to sail through the ocean of the Daoist philosophy.A great book by a great author.
Dr. Yang, Jwing Ming work is a tremendous resource for anyone interested in Chinese martial arts and qigong, and now he has made a very valuable contribution to the accessibility of this foundation book on Taoism. His translation is clear and his interpretation of the text makes it more accessible to those of us in the West. I also appreciate his inclusion of historical Chinese commentaries on the chapters. His unique contribution of interpreting the text from a qigong perspective is a wonderful contribution. Having read many translations of the TTC over the years, I know that this is the one I will be returning to to deepen my understanding over the years. Thank you Dr. Yang!
I first saw this book in local B@N book store and my first reaction was very skeptical. Another rendition of TTC ? And what it has to do with Qigong ? Having time to look through this book more closely realization came - it has to do with every aspect of life. So I bought book ......from Amazon. Why? Because here it is a lot cheaper. But this is not the point. The point is how Dr. Yang was able to interwoven Lao Tse treatise ,his own life time experience and his own understanding of this treatise and extracts on the subject from different historical figures from ancient China, most of them not find anywhere else. So it is like having Three books under one cover. And Master Yang did it brilliantly! Thats what is unique about this book. The stile of translation similar to James Legge translation of the same treatise.but in the same time differ.Excellent achievement !!!!!!! What is next, Dr. Yang?
